15. Public Enemy- It Takes A Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back
Tuesday Dec 15, 2020
Tuesday Dec 15, 2020
We are talking about the first true rap album on the top 500. It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back by Public Enemy. We talk about the incredible sound on the album, Chuck D and his awesome presence and what do we make of Flavor Flav any way?
Before we get into the album, we have a couple of special guests to talk about Minnesota United soccer and we once again debate how good is Wonderwall by Oasis as a stadium song.
We talk about WHY Aarons was sleeping in a tent and how to buy albums if you aren't just looking for some Pearl Jam at PearlJam.com. We also talk about the Grammys and how the Weeknd got screwed and we meet Dirty Granny, a new predictable character.
Then we talk about the history of Public Enemy. How did Chuck D, Flavor Flav, Professor Grif, Terminator X and the Bomb Squad all come together to make the rap album that inspired the rest. We talk samples, rapping about not doing drugs and Aaron going to an exotic animal show. Then we talk about one of the greatest samples in R and B history, "Darkest Light" by The Lafayette Afro Rock Band. It has been used by Jay Z, Heavy D and of course, Wreckx-n-Effect.
Then Russ drops a bomb on us and leaves us wanting more and Matt shows off his great Marv Albert impression.
NEXT WEEK. WE ARE CHANGING IT UP AND LISTENING TO THE ROLLING STONE GREATEST ROCK CHRISTMAS SONGS. HERE IS A LINK.

13. Aretha Franklin: I Have Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You (..r feet)

Tuesday Dec 08, 2020
This week the Beck Did It Better boys dive into the 1967 record from the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin. We are talking about the great documentary "Amazing Grace" and why James Cleveland bugged us so much. We delve into recording the album at Muscle Shoals and why Aretha's version of RESPECT is so much better than Otis Redding's.
We get a couple of calls from (very nice) people (that we don't make fun of) demanding to have Matt talk more and we get into whether or not Oasis' "Wonderwall" is a good stadium song for the Minnesota United FC or if something more homegrown might work better. We look at some famous stadium songs and decide that BECK DOES IT BETTER.
Then we talk about reffing and how unimportant things like rules and starting the watch. Then we talk about the male boudoir photoshoot and Aaron gives us a pallet cleaner with a list of the best NEEDLE DROPS on any album. Does John Coltrane make the list? How about the equally famous group UGK? Jay-Z? Al Green? Raveonettes? This list is a wild one and we are very respectful of Aaron's decisions.
We then marvel at Aretha's voice and talk The Blues Brothers and how it is the one place you can find James Brown, Ray Charles, Cab Calloway, Aretha, and the lyrical stylings of Dan Aykroyd.
Plus the intros to this podcast just get better and better.
If you are still reading this, you are a psycho and just the kind of person who we want to interact with.

In this episode, we meet at a spooky mansion to talk about the best selling album of all time. Thriller! Does that make it the best album ever?
We talk about flying with children, talking to kids about werewolves, and our favorite way to cook vanilla coconut greens. Then we look at the slickly produced "Thriller" and talk about if it is too perfect? We talk Quincy Jones, more Paul McCartney, and how does such a great album end with such a dud, and should every song end with a conversation about the song?
Russ brings us the best handclaps ever in a song, from Missy Elliot to the Black Eyed Peas. Also, Aaron announces that a song sucks (and he is right!) and finds out how BECK DID IT BETTER!
Feel free to follow us on instagram and twitter @beckdiditbetter and email us at beckdiditbetter@gmail.com
Finally, do you think Aaron is a real moron? How could you? He is a treasure and a big sweetie! Feel free to call the Beck Line anyway 802 277 BECK (2325)

We are all thankful for many things this year. We are especially thankful for the support we get from our loved ones when making this podcast. It is more like indifference but we still appreciate it.
The three spouses of the members of Beck Did It Better got on the mic to talk to Russ about their thoughts on the podcast, when it bugs them, and they give some dating advice to Russell.
Enjoy the special thanksgiving episode of BECK DID IT BETTER.

We talk Lauryn Hill and her only album on the Top 500. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is #10 on the list. We take some more voicemails from angry listeners and talk about a random playlist that is not making fun of said caller. It Thuds!
We talk politics and gas station etiquette while Russ explains what tenterhooks are. Russ talks about his job in a pyramid scheme while the rest of the guys ignore some great nightmare on elm street joke(s).
We talk about Lauryn's time at the Apollo and on Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit. We also talk about every album that won best album and best newcomer. One of them MIGHT surprise you.
